- Pawpawsaurus wurde erstmals von Y.-N. Lee (1996) benannt. Sein Typ ist P. campbelli.
- Er wurde der Nodosauridae von Y.-N. Lee (1996) zugeordnet. Diese Zuordnung wurde von T. L. Ford (2000), P. M. Barrett (2001), K. Carpenter (2001), T. L. Ford & J. I. Kirkland (2001), X. Pereda Suberbiola & P. M. Galton (2001) und M. K. Vickaryous et al. (2001) bestätigt.
- Er wurde der Polacanthinae von W. T. Blows (2001) zugeordnet.

Arten[]
- P. campbelli ist die einzige bekannte Art dieser Gattung. Sie wurde 1996 von Yuong-Nam Lee beschrieben. Das Art-Epitheton ehrt Cameron Campbell, die Entdecker des Holotypus.[3]
